The Foreshortened Christ (Lamentation of Christ)

Biblical Context

Lamentation - The mourning over Christ's body after the Crucifixion and before his burial. While not directly described in scripture, it is derived from the burial accounts in the Gospels (Matthew 27:57-61, Mark 15:42-47, Luke 23:50-56, John 19:38-42).

Famous for its dramatic use of foreshortening, showing Christ's body from the feet with the wounds in his feet prominently visible.
