Hadrianic Tondi (North Side: Lion Hunt and Sacrifice to Hercules) Self-researched

Location: Arch of Constantine, Rome
Medium: White Luna marble relief, c. 2.4m diameter, framed in porphyry

The right pair of roundels on the north side depicts a dramatic lion hunt (left tondo) and a sacrifice to Hercules (right tondo). As with all the Hadrianic tondi, the emperor's head was recarved — in hunting scenes to resemble Constantine, and in sacrifice scenes to resemble Licinius or Constantius I. The high-relief carving shows the classical Hadrianic style with carefully modeled anatomy and deep undercutting.
