John the Baptist
Summary
John the Baptist was a Jewish preacher active in the area of the Jordan River in the early first century AD. He baptized Jesus in the Jordan River and is considered a major religious figure in Christianity, Islam, and other faiths. John is the patron saint of Florence, to whom the Florence Baptistery is dedicated. His life and martyrdom are depicted on the Baptistery doors.
