Dormition of the Virgin
Summary
The Dormition of the Mother of God celebrates the "falling asleep" (death) of Mary the Theotokos and her being taken up into heaven. Though not described in canonical scripture, the tradition became central to Christian art and devotion, especially in the Eastern churches. The Feast of the Dormition is observed on August 15.
