Italian sculptor and father of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He contributed dynamic sculptures to the Pauline Chapel at Santa Maria Maggiore, framing the Salus Populi Romani icon. Both Pietro and his more famous son Gian Lorenzo are buried in the basilica, near the Sistine Chapel.
