Italian painter and architect of the late Mannerist and early Baroque period. Trained in Florence under Alessandro Allori, he spent the last nine years of his life in Rome. At Santa Maria Maggiore, he painted the Virgin and apostles in the dome of the Pauline Chapel, a work notable for incorporating Galileo's telescopic observations of the moon into his depiction of the Virgin standing on a lunar surface.
