Italian painter and instructor, active in Bologna and later in Rome. Along with his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico, Annibale was one of the founders of a leading strand of the Baroque style, aspiring for a return to classical monumentality with added dynamism. His masterwork is the ceiling of the gallery of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, which was enormously influential on subsequent Roman painting. He was buried in the Pantheon near Raphael, as he had requested.
